The Present Link, initiated in 2011, is an ongoing project involving writers and photographers from around the world.
The process begins with the secret selection of an anonymous black & white photograph. This image is then given to a writer to analyse with the aid of a questionnaire. They are tasked with writing a detailed description of the image; from pragmatic elements such as composition and content, to subjective and interpretive details such as tone or potential subplot.
On completion this description is passed onto a photographer minus the original image. They are then tasked with creating a new photograph, faithful to the written analysis. This image is then passed onto a new writer to conduct another written analysis, this text is then passed onto a new photographer and so on. Effectively creating a self-perpetuating game of creative Chinese Whispers.
The potentially infinite process is inspired by Dada games and Surrealist Exquisite Corpses, exploring ideas of translation between text and image, subjective interpretation and the consequence of the 'butterfly effect'. It will also link together practitioners from around the world: photographers and writers of different backgrounds from across the UK and Europe, as well as from North America and Australia.
